Questions about reflux set up
« on: March 08, 2008, 10:14:19 AM »
To investigate the variation of boiling point for a mixture of two immiscible liquids, a reflux setup is used. In performing the reflux set up, pear shaped flask is preferred and micro-burner is used instead of common Bunsen burner. However, can anyone explain how is the differences between pear shaped flask and the round bottom flask, and why micro-burner is used instead of Bunsen burner?

THANK YOU!

What else does a reflux setup need, and what does it do?  Can you see how a pear-shaped flask and a microburner have similar functions to that other piece?  If you don't have a pear-shaped flask handy, can you guess how it's different from a round bottomed flask?

Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
