REDUCTIVE ANIMANTION *delete me*
« on: March 02, 2005, 12:15:12 AM »
in methylmans reductive amination. decided to mix 750ml methanol with 400mg of mercuric chloride and added it to 2liter flask with the 27.5 g of al. after about five minutes little bubbles appeared and was looking good. then all of a sudden it super refluxed, shooting out most of my methanol out my 400mm condenser just like a volcano, hadnt even started to add my mixture from the funnel. ive heard of stuffing my condenser with steel wool to prevent it from shooting out. ive read about diffrent ways to prepare the animation prior to adding mixture on the hive. but have has not returned as of yet. I know its a hot reaction with high refulx but how can i keep my methanol from shooting up that way. PLEASE *delete me*

add the methanol dropwise.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

It won't be an issue if you add it dropwise.
