confusing Chemical Kinetics question
« on: March 14, 2008, 08:05:50 AM »
This question was on this website with quizes in chapter of chemical kinetics(quiz bank 10).Anyways I solved this question and checked my work.I keep getting the answer 10(which is D).But the answer is actually A.WHY?

here is the link of the question(very clear) :
http://lrc-srvr.mps.ohio-state.edu/shell-cgi/world/genquiz.pl

Here is the question(not very clear though):

Question 2.
Tabulated below are initial rate data for the reaction:

2 Fe(CN)63- + 2 I-> 2 Fe(CN)64- + I2
InitialRun  [Fe(CN)63-]    [I-]0    [Fe(CN)64-]0   [I2]       Rate (M/s)
    1              0.01         0.01         0.01           0.01      1 x 10-5
    2              0.01         0.02         0.01           0.01      2 x 10-5
    3              0.02         0.02         0.01           0.01      8 x 10-5
    4              0.02         0.02         0.02           0.01      8 x 10-5
    5              0.02         0.02         0.02           0.02      8 x 10-5

The value of k is:

 a)   10^7 M^-5 s^-1
 b)   10^3 M^-3 s^-1
 c)   none of these
 d)   10 M^-2 s^-1
 e)   50 M^-2 s^-1

D seems like the correct answer to me.  Purely from dimensional analysis, A implies that the reaction is sixth order.  However, looking at the dependence of the rate on the concentrations of reactants and products, the reaction looks like it is second-order in [Fe(CN)63-], first-order in [I-], and zeroth-order in [Fe(CN)64-] and [I2] giving overall third-order kinetics.
