Order of reaction graph
« on: March 19, 2008, 12:54:47 AM »
For the experiments in which [H2O2] was kept constant, plot a graph of reaction rate versus [NaI].  From the shape of the graph, determine if the reaction is first order or second order with respect to NaI.

Reaction   1
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):151.0

Reaction   2
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):8.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):2.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):93.0

Reaction   3
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):6.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):4.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):61.0

Reaction   4
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):4.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):6.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):41.0

Reaction   5
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):8.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):2.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):99.0

Reaction   6
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):6.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):4.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):73.0

Reaction   7
Volume of 6% H2O2 (mL):10.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):0.0
Volume of 1.0 M NaI (mL):4.0
Volume of distilled water (mL):6.0
O2 production in 60 s (mL):44.0

The following reactions I found had [H2O2] kept constant:
Reaction 1
Reaction 5
Reaction 6
Reaction 7

For the experiments in which [H2O2] was kept constant, plot a graph of reaction rate versus [NaI].

My question is what would my x-axis be called and what would my y-axis be called?

Thank you

From the second reference:

You can establish the order of reaction with respect to a reactant from a concentration against time graph. However, it can sometimes be difficult to decide if a reaction is first-order or second-order from the concentration-time graph. A rate-concentration graph quickly reveals the order with respect to a reactant.

Where:

(y vs x) = concentration vs. time

(y vs. x) = rate vs. concentration

Im assuming I use a rate vs. concentration graph.

Am I correct?

BY how would I write concentration on the x axis. Would I just write 10.0 and that would be it for the x axis?
