pOH calculation help?
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:57:16 PM »
Hi,
I am having trouble with this problem I think I have it right ,but id like for someone to double check my work.  Onto the problem,  Calculate the pOH of a 1.826 M aqueous solution of KOH at 25 degrees C.

I think I just take the -log of 1.826 and that is the anwser ,but I end up with -.26 , I dont think you can have a negative can you?

  Thank you,

Yes you can have a negative number.
The log (base 10) of 1 is 0. Anything larger the 1 will be a negative number.
You can have a negative pH and pOH.

Even teachers get caught by this one!

*Looks the other way*

Yeah negative and >14 pH and pOH values are possible... and those values apply to the strong acids and bases you'd often use in a school science lesson. The 1-14 pH scale is really only meaningful when talking about diluted acids/bases that are associated with biology and consumer products.

Yes, you can even find a pH of -3.5 in biological acid mining leachate, it's not as uncommon as people might think.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
