Thinking of building my own water distillation setup
« on: April 02, 2008, 04:34:40 AM »
I've been thinking about this for some time now.  I haven't really sat down and drawn out the plans. I've been having an internal debate over the virtues of glass and metal in this application.  The purist in me really wants a sweet glass set up.  The pragmatist says I should just get stainless and call it a day.  I know that you can buy home water distilleries from amazon but there is something special about designing your own.  If I were to go go the stainless route I feel like I would need to run water through the set up multiple times and then have it tested for content to feel satisfied with its purity.  I drink distilled water regularly. I figure that if I want to drink water it should just be water...people that get concerned about it sucking the minerals out of your body are over thinking it.  If you're worried throw a pinch of salt in it, you won't taste it.  My thought is that I get enough salts and minerals in my diet. Anyway...anyone ever undertake this task? Like I said I want to produce my own drinking water. Thoughts?

I wandered over here from Citizen Chemist

Some time ago I Googled “home made solar water distillation” and got lots of hits. It was very interesting the ideas already out there.

I have considered the solar route...living on southern california makes the sun a great source of free energy. I think I have so many ideas I can't decide which one to pursue.

Many think of projects on their own in an attempt to not be influenced by others in the hope of thinking outside the box. Others like to research what has been done so as not to reinvent the wheel. You learn both ways.
