i am preparing a new Schiff bases and my problem is how to purify my compound. The method in preparing my Schiff bases that i am using now is to reflux with excess of ethanol. I did not manage to get crystal from it. Please help me in order to get the pure compound..

Most Schiff bases (imines) that I've dealt with have been reasonably different in polarity to the parent carbonyl and amine so that column chromatography or similar worked well. Which component do you have in excess, and what kind of scale are you working on? Could you remove e.g. excess aldehyde via an aqueous bisulfite wash (as per http://www.orgsyn.org/orgsyn/orgsyn/prepContent.asp?prep=cv2p0323)?

Can you say (roughly, if necessary) which carbonyl and which amine you're condensing?
