Sorry, but I'm new in Organic!  ::)

Will methyl-beta-D-galactopyranose give positive Tollen's test? (Explanation)

I thank everyone in advance for some support on this question! :-)

Well, you're going to have to write the explanation in your own words, so you can start by finding out what Tollen's test is, and how it works.  You should be able to tell, from the structure of your compound, if it will react or not.

There are two possible answers.  One is more complete as your molecule can exist in equilibrium with its aldose.  Aldehyde is a key word.

Dear friends!  ::)

The thing is that I'm unsure about the structure, so is the methyl on the second carbon? If so, then we have a postive Tollen's test due to the fact that the aldehyde group will be ox?  ::)

Please draw the structure or find a picture then.  If it is wrong we can helo you.

Are you sure that the name of the compound is correct?  methyl-beta-D-galactopyranose does not unambiguously identify a single chemical species.   methyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside would, however, unambiguously name a chemical compound.
