Here are a couple of suggestions in the industrial chemistry side:
1) create a new method to make dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid (common in the soap industry)
2) create a environmentally friendly hydrocarbon remover (one that removes tar, etc)
hint: one made from long chain fatty acids
3) polymer softeners (makes plastics less brittle)
4) plastic hardeners (reduces setting times)
Each one of these areas could be compared with: 1) available raw materials, 2) costs of reagents, processing and final product 3) cost effectiveness when compared with other eqiuvalent products.
These are just suggestions. Take the ones you like (or that have available information), and discard the remaining ones.
