Zinc dust, and Pd/heat

The other information given is that compound E's molecular formula is C24H12. The question is asking for the structures of compound D and E.

The problem I have with this question is that I do not know what Zinc dust or Pd/Heat do. It doesn't say anything about them in my organic chemistry textbook. Can anybody help me?

I believe the Pd, with heat and pressure, reduces double bonds of alkenes selectively over double bonds of carbonyls. Pt for example is likely to reduce both double bonds and carbonyl double bonds.

Dont know what Zinc dust does.

I guess maybe the Zn dust play a role like Na in Wurtz reaction, because, the Carbon number doubles so in my opinion it's can be that ability
