In an experiment to examine the breakdown of starch by dilute hydrochloric acid and by an enzyme; what was the the purpose for adding iodine solution and what was the purpose for adding Benedict's reagent?

What is iodine used for (especially in the presence of starch), what is Benedict's reagent used for?

one last question

Why did the solution of starch and HCl have to be neutralised with sodium hydroxide before we added the  benedict reagent to test for gucose and maltose?
