Half-reaction catalysis question
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:21:15 PM »
So here's the reaction I'm interested in:

2e- + H2O + R-CHOH-R' -> 2OH- + R-CH2-R'

The organic is basically a carbohydrate or polyalcohol.  For now, assume that any catalyst and any reaction conditions can be used (although aqueous conditions are preferred for obvious reasons), and assume that the electron transport to the reaction is not limiting.  I've been trying to find the answers to the following questions:

1) What is the maximum forward reaction rate of this reaction assuming use of the best known catalyst?

2) What is the minimum free energy required for the electrons such that the forward reaction is favorable?

3) What is the dependence of the reaction rate on the electron energy?  On the removal of the products (partitioning or neutralization)?  On temperature/pressure?

I'd appreciate any feedback or pointers to useful resources.  Thanks in advance!
