Is tetrachloroethylene useful for anything?
« on: May 17, 2008, 04:31:46 PM »
I have a bottle of anti-stat film cleaner (which is a mixture of tetrachloroethylene and isopropyl alcohol) from my photography days.

Is there any uses for this? I was just going to let it evaporate and keep the brown bottle it came it.

You could try and use it to clean any stains out of some clothes. In its most common form it is dry cleaning liquid.

Its fairly nasty stuff, but makes for a good NP solvent.

High temperatures decompose it to phosgene, which is extremely nasty stuff, but has many uses in organic chemistry.

Wear gloves.  I believe it has been found to cause liver cancer and does absorb through the skin.  Wouldn't be surprised if it were a mutagen and teratogen as well.
