Need help solving this problem FAST. PLEASE HELP :)
« on: May 28, 2008, 10:09:11 PM »
Problems:
Given the following pycnometer data:         Pycnometer is the flask and a one hole rubber stopper.

    * Weight of the water filled flask and stopper...     60.2555 g
    * Density of water used in experiment....     0.9932 g/cc
    * Weight of the flask, solid, and stopper....     132.0768 g
    * Weight of the EMPTY flask and stopper...     33.2351 g
    * Weight of the flask, solid, stopper, and water..     140.2725 g

CALCULATE:
The WEIGHT of solid used   _______________ (e)
The VOLUME contained by the flask
enter (f) to 3 decimal places   _______________ (f)
The volume of water needed to fill the flask when the SOLID is in the flask
enter (g) to 3 decimal places    _______________ (g)
The VOLUME of the SOLID   _______________ (h)
The DENSITY of the SOLID   _______________ (i)

So far I got:

e = 98.8417 g
f = 27.205 cc
g = 8.251 cc

h, and i are killing me. Please if someone can offer some help that would greatly be appreciated!
Sorry to post this again but I really really need some help on these problems. I have to answer it by tonight. Someone here has to know how to do it. I just need a little help.

h: Imagine a solid being dropped into a flask filled with water. The water that is displaced when the solid is dropped into the flask is the volume of the solid, right? Same thing goes. Imagine now a solid with volume x is inside the flask without and water. If you need y more volume of water to fill up the flask(let's say volume of the flask is z), what is the volume of solid? Try to think mathematically.

No matters what results are waiting for us, it's nothing but the DESTINY!!!!!!!!!!!!

i: Density is mass/volume
so simply use the mass you calculated in e) and the volume you get for i) and your done  :D

I know but I need to find H first and I have no idea how to find H. Can anyone work out the problem for me so I can see it being done?

As Astrokel already wrote - solid volume is that of displaced water. You know volume of water without solid in and voume with solid in.
