D or L vs DL aminoacid?
« on: June 07, 2008, 06:02:29 PM »
What is the difference between a D or L amino acid vs a DL aminoacid (ie as from potassium pthalmide)?

I understand what a D or L amino acid is but I don't know what a DL aminoacid is. I would have thought that it had to do with two chirality centers, but that doesn't appear to be the case, since an amino acid, with one chirality center can be DL.

It means it is a racemic mixture of the two possible enantiomers.
