Bromination fo Naphthalene
« on: June 19, 2008, 08:17:45 PM »
I tried to synthesize 1,4-Dibromonaphthalene from naphthalene using CuBr2/Al2O3.  I carried out the reaction in CCl4 at 130oC though, the reaction mixture showed only 1-bromonaphthalene.

Is there any other methods for getting 1,4-dibromonaphthalene from naphthalene?

If you already have some 1-bromonaphthalene, then you could always give http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0040-4020(02)00549-5 (Tetrahedron, 2002, 5603) a go, perhaps?

What methods are you using to find out what you have though? Previous similar experience (with protected 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines in my case) suggested that the bromo compounds run very similar on TLC - stained differently with ansialdehyde iirc, and LC-MS was annoying as too harsh and knocked off the bromine)
