Question regarding lattice energy
« on: July 16, 2008, 07:25:19 PM »
Which of the following would have the largest (most negative) lattice energy?

A) NaF
B) MgF2
C) LiCl
D) MgI2
E) KBr

I found all of them except for MgI2..Is there an easy way to know which ones have the largest energy and which have the smallest energy? I've been looking everywhere trying to find it, but no luck. ??? If someone could help me figure out the lattice energy of MgI2 that would be great! Thanks  :)

NaF = -923 kJ
MgF2= -2962 kJ
LiCl= -853 kJ
MgI2= ?
KBr= -682

You should be able to answer the question without looking up the values.  What factors influence lattice energy?  How does the charge of the ions affect lattice energy?  Ion size?

I guess I won't be able to answer that question until I learn the material in class.  I was reading ch 9 in my chemistry txt book so that I would be able to understand some of the stuff in it before we start the chapter.  We are behind in class and we haven't started chapter 9 yet.  We start it on Monday and have a test on chapter 7,8, and 9 next thursday.  And then 4 days after that we have our final exam which is cumulative.  I always have to read the chapters before the lecture b/c otherwise I have no idea what our teacher is talking about.
