Organic Chem textbooks--Any advice?
« on: July 26, 2008, 06:46:52 PM »
I hate to start a new topic on this, but I'm have trouble deciding which of the following orgo textbooks to buy. It will be a completely new subject to me and I will be taking it for the first time in college this fall. If anyone has read any of these please let me know whether you found it helpful or not.

This one is my first choice based on what I've read about it: http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-ChemistryNOW-Joseph-Hornback/dp/0534389511

This is the one I'm required to buy for college: http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-Reactivity-Seyhan-Ege/dp/0618318097/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217111476&sr=8-1

Here are the rest: http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-Francis-Carey/dp/0073311847/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217011302&sr=1-5
http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-Jonathan-Clayden/dp/0198503466
http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Chemistry-John-E-McMurry/dp/0495118370/ref=pd_bbs_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217013703&sr=8-7

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!

I thought Organic Chemistry by McMurry was very easy to read and understand, almost fun.

I would go with whichever one your course uses.  It's possible your professor may assign problems out of it and such.

Oh yes I planned on getting the text book required by my professor, but I would also like a second one just as a reference (and that extra bit of help if needed). I've heard Hornback's is very good for beginners, but it seems the Clayden book is equally as good. I've narrowed it down to those two, and it seems I've been leaning towards Hornback's because I've read that Clayden's is a bit advanced.
