Chemical Equations

Predict the products and balance

1) Propane gas (C3H8) is burned in excess oxygen.
    C3H8 + O2 -> CO + H2
    2C3H8 + 3O2 -> 6CO +8H2

2) Dinitrogen pentoxide gas is added to distilled water
    N2O5 + H2O -> N2O3 + OH
    N2O5 + 3H2O -> 2N2O3 + 6OH

3) Sodium hydroxide solution is added to a solution of iron (III) bromide.
    NaOH + FeBr3 -> NaBr + Fe(OH)3
    3NaOH + FeBr3 -> 3NaBr + Fe(OH)3

4) Sulfuric acid is combined with solid magnesium hydroxide.
    H2SO4 + Mg(OH)2 -> H2O + MgSO4

5) Solid barium oxide is added to distilled water.
    BaO + H2O->
       I don't know how to set up the product

6) Isopropyl alcohol is burned in air.
    C3H7OH -> CH + OH

7) Solid aluminum hydroxide is added to perchloric acid.
    Al(OH)3 + HClO4 -> Al(ClO4)3 + H2O
    Al(OH)3 + 3HClO4 -> Al(ClO4)3 + 3H2O

1 & 6) Those aren't the products of combustion

Pretty good.  For 1 and 6 review combustion products.  You don't get CO, CH, or OH.

For 5, this reaction form a strong base.

Number 2 produces a strong acid

Correct.  As far as the explanation goes, I can't really say.

N2O5 reacts with water (hydrolyses) to produce nitric acid. Thus, nitrogen pentoxide is the anhydride of nitric acid:

N2O5 + H2O ------->  2 HNO3

barium oxide
BaO + H2O ------> Ba(OH)2

isopropyl alcohol

2 C3H7OH + 9 O2 --------->  6 CO2 + 8 H2O

BaO is dissolves in the water to yeild Ba2+ and O2- ions.

The O2- ion is oxisdisable and hence rips a proton off of the water molecules.

A general reaction is:

O2- + H2O --> 2OH-.

The OH- ions bind with the Ba2+ ions to form BaOH2

... I think. Its the only way I can see it happening.
Don't believe atoms, they make up everything!
