How does Morphine seperate racemic mixtures?
« on: March 23, 2005, 05:10:24 PM »
I would like to say I've attempted this problem before looking for help, but I have to admitt I have NO idea how to go about answering this problem:
Describe how Morphine is used to separate a racemic mixture of the amino acid, phenylalanine, showing the chemical reactions at appropriate places????

LOST,
AMS :-\

It makes diastereomers
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Morphine is an optically active base. With racemic acids it can form diastereomeric salts that can be separated by a fractional crystallization.
