How oxygen relates to the atom

The question is,
How does the discovery of oxygen relate to the formation of the modern model of the atom?

I wouldn't have thought there was a direct connection.

But for oxygen I would google: Priestly, Lavoisier, Dalton, phlogiston.

for "modern model of the atom" I would suggest Rutherford/Geiger/Marsden gold foil experiment is much more relevant.
