At some point in this experiment, water was added to convert the magnesium nitride to magnesium oxide. If all of the magnesium nitride is not converted to magnesium oxide, what effect will this have on the mass of the product (higher, lower, or no effect)?


I'm having trouble understanding the question. Basically, Mg3N2 produces MgO after a catalyst (water) is added. Mg3N2 has a higher molar mass than MgO, yet if not all the nitride is converted than the product should weigh less? I do not seem to understand the process or reasoning (more important for me to understand the reasoning than the answer).
