are coefficients relevant when determining oxidation states?
« on: October 13, 2008, 03:08:42 PM »
for example, using ox. numbers to find what is oxidized and reduced in the following equation:

2Al + 3Fe(2+) --> 2Al(3+) + 3Fe

Al: 0 to +3
Fe: +2 to 0  ???

do the coefficients matter in this step?
