Why do we need the total enzyme concentration to find K
cat
?
K
cat
=V
max
/[E
t
]
V
max
=K
2
[E
t
]
Doesn't this cancel out so that K
cat
=K
2
? My book says this definition is an approximation, but if that's the case doesn't the first definition also have to be an approximation?

are two different names same thing, the rate constant for conversion of the enzyme-substrate complex to enzyme + product.
