I have an energy level diagram from n=1 to n=5.

One of the questions is: "how many absorptions are possible starting at n=3?"

I answered :"infinity, until the electron is emitted from the atom."

The answer is 2 (n=3 to n=5)

Can the electron really only absorb as much as the highest numbered principle quantum number on the diagram?

Sounds to me like the question is poorly worded.

Thanks for the reply.

This question was on an exam we had yesterday. Here's a snapshot of the key that was posted today? Question (b) is the one I'm talking about.

Having seen this, would you say my answer of "infinity, until the electron is emitted" is incorrect?

IMHO this answer is correct. Perhaps what the teacher wanted to ask was "How many emissions are possible", then 2 will be OK. But as it is now, infinity is a correct answer.

Great, I'm glad you think so. We have an opportunity to request a regrade, so I will submit this question to be regraded. The tests are graded by TA's, so if the professor decides my answer is correct, it will bring my exam grade up to an A.  :D

Thanks for your help here. This forum is awesome!
