6N HCl
« on: November 17, 2008, 10:23:48 AM »
Hi

1) If I take 400 ml 6N HCl and boil it down to 300 ml will normality of HCl change or not? what will be new N if changed?

2) If I take 100 ml aqua regia (80 ml Con.HCl + 20 ml Con.HNO3) plus 300 ml 6N HCl and boil it down to 300 ml. what will be new normality of 6N HCl?Will go up?

Please help

6 N HCl has a concentration very close (but slightly above) to the azeotropic mixture water-HCl containing 20.2 % (w/w) of HCl and constant boiling point 108.6 C. Hence after boiling you will get 300 ml HCl of this concentration.

Aqua regia will decompose when heating, at least partially. So it is difficult to foresee an exact concentration of HCl. I can only safely state that last drops of distillate will show content of the azeotrope.

First things first: what is normality definition?
