Need Help Regarding Chemical Bonding
« on: November 23, 2008, 03:29:59 PM »
A few questions for you guys.

1) The electrons in the bond between Hydrogen and Fluorine are more strongly attracted to the atom of...
    a) Hydrogen, which has the higher electronegativity
    b) Fluorine, which has the higher electronegativity
    c) Hydrogen, which has the lower electronegativity
    d) Fluorine, which has the lower electronegativity

2) Which pair of atoms will share electrons when a bond is formed between them?
    a) Ba and I
    b) Br and Cl
    c) K and Cl
    d) Li and I

3) Which molecule has an asymmetrical shape?
    a) N2
    b) NH3
    c) CO2
    d) CCl2

4) The properties of water are vitally important to all living things on Earth. How does the polarity of water molecules affect a person?
    a) It allows water to be exhaled in our breath
    b) It keeps water from boiling at human body temperatures
    c) It does not allow water to evaporate off of our skin
    d) It allows water to carry dissolved substances in our skin

5) Bond energy is the energy...
    a) Required to break a chemical bond
    b) Released when a chemical bond breaks
    c) Required to form a chemical bond
    d) Absorbed when a chemical bond forms

Thanks for your time and effort!

What are the electronegativities of fluorine and hydrogen?

What type of bond shares electrons?

3) Which molecule has an asymmetrical shape?
    a) N2
    b) NH3
    c) CO2
    d) CCl2
What are the lewis structures for these compounds?  Are you sure CCl2 is correct?
