How to tell if an intermediate is covalently bound or free-aspartyl protease?

so with enzymes there is something called covalent catalysis where the enzyme actually binds to the active site covalently. there are two proposed mechanisms, one with a covalently bound intermediate one without, experimentally how could you tell the presence of one or the other?
