I think to get a straight answer to that question you need to specify what kind of chemist.  I'm from the states and the income varies greatly depending on what field of chemistry (pharmaceuticals for example) you work in and what discipline (i.e. research or process) within that field.

If you are talking about chemistry chemists and not pharmacist chemists then this website should help:

http://www.raci.org.au/national/membership/salaries.html

The Royal Australian Chemical Association does a survey every so often of chemists in Australia and how much they earn.....doing a breakdown based on years of study/experience. They have a free summary from 1999 available for download.

The median total salary package, over all categories was about $72,600.   :)
