hybridization of NON-central atom
« on: January 06, 2009, 10:52:48 AM »
Hello, I am a new guy,
may i ask, how can i predict the hybridization inside a NON-CENTRAL atom???such as the O atoms in the NO3 - , nitrate ion?

it is kind of arbitrary to talk about hybridization in a molecule that only forms one bond
hybridization is a semi-quantitive concept which helps to understand molecular geometry and for the oxygen in this case it is not really helpful to consider it.
formally it would be somewhere in between sp3 and sp2 I guess

Felixe is likely overthinking the problem because he is a theoretical chemist.
To determine the hybridization: (1) Draw the structure. (2) Draw any relevant resonances. (3) The correct hybridization is the one associated with the highest bond-order, for that atom in any appropriate resonance structure.

Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

the hybridization concept is developed by VBT n according to this there is no hybridization in the non central atoms ...
