Metal Complex Colours
« on: February 11, 2009, 03:10:23 PM »
Hi!

I've been set to find out the colours of different metal complexes but there seems to be a few which I can't find: Cu(en)3 but search engines refer me to Co(en)3.

Anyone know the complex colour of:
  • [Cu(en)32+]
  • [Cu(C2O4)34-]
  • [Fe(OH)2(H2O)4]
  • [V(H2O)Cl2]+
Thanks
 :)

Can you find some image results by typing in the name?  Like copper chromate ion, or vanadium hydrated chloride, or some hybrid of words like that, that lead you to a picture with the correct formula?  I don't even know, for example, what (en) is the abbreviation for.

Dear Arkcon;

For some common Ligands:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligand#Common_ligands

Dear piza1512;

May they be of some help to you?:
    -   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moolooite
    -   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron(II)_hydroxide
    -   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanadium(III)_chloride
(They may not all fit exactly.)

Good Luck!

I've tried to look at those pages but they don't give me any information on complex colours!

By typing the complete names in Google Image search, I managed to find this page of hydroponic chemicals, which list the colors by name:

http://www.avachemicals.net/micronutrients.html

People often ask for an online page with all the colors on it, and I'm of the opinion that you just won't have much success finding one.  Here's where I explained it, a while back.
