Organic lab question...
« on: February 26, 2009, 06:41:14 PM »
an ether solution ofa mixture is extracted with sodium bicarbnate solution
to form aqueous layer A and organic layer B. The organic layer B is then extracted with
sodium hydroxide solution to form aqueous layer C and organic layer D. Both Solutions A
and C are seperately treated with hydrochloric acid to give solutions E and F
respectively. Give the structure{s) for in A, B, C, D, E, and F and explain using a flow
chart.

I'm not really sure how to go about answering this problem... can anyone lead me in the right direction
  :rarrow:Sorry forgot to add the mixture contains three compounds:phenol, benzoic acid, and biphenyl

Dear jessigirl2011;

Could the "Organic Separation Flowchart" in the Attachment be of some help to you?

Good Luck!
