Changed colour of Isopropanol
« on: November 05, 2010, 06:54:22 AM »
Hi All,

By error, excess resin from AEX chromatography was kept in Isopropanol, not in 20% EtOH as it should be stored according to manufacturer’s recommendation. It was stored in closed white plastic Jerrycan. The colour of isopropanol in Jerrycan changed to yellow. I assume exposure to light and air increases the rate of peroxide formation, but would peroxides formation change the colour of Isopropanol to yellow? I can’t find any information about the colour change of stored Isopropanol, and why would it happen.

Regards,

Maybe your isopropanol was oxidized to acetone and then self-condensation took place? AEX is known for catalyzing aldol reactions (e.g. doi:10.1016/S0926-860X(99)00510-4 ).
