succinyl chloride purification
« on: March 10, 2009, 09:15:26 AM »
Hi,

I am going to do Friedel-Crafts acylation. Wondering, if I have commercially received 95% pure succinyl chloride should I purify it before? I mean it could be contaminated with some HCl etc... Is it fatal for Friedel-Crafts acylation? The presence of some HCl?

Thank you.

You can purify it if you'd like, but it might not be that important.

Now, hopefully you're not serious about the HCl contamination in a Friedel-Crafts...

think, what's also a product from that reaction and the work up?  ;D  ;)

Id purify it.  Only takes an hour to distill something and if the reaction goes wrong you cannot blame the impurities in the succinyl chloride.

A more likely contaminant would be the corresponding carboxlic acid of succinyl chloride

oh sorry for misunderstanding :D

yes...in friedel crafts it is ok with HCl...but in my case friedel is not very selective...so now I am going to use some grignard/CuBr/LiBr complex to couple it with succinyl chloride. In this case HCl is important...

Why not dry the stuff first, and then sparge with helium or pull a decent vacuum? I don't think distilling is that good of an idea. Besides, a proper distillation takes longer than an hour, at least for any sizable quantity.

If you need to purify the succinyl chloride, I recommend you investigate and most certainly obtain Purification of Laboratory Chemicals by Amarego. You will find that book an invaluable resource--your quality of life will greatly improve, knowing that you can make extremely pure chemicals on the cheap from technical grade feedstock.
