Well, I'm fairly sure the client itself is (was?) free, it's just the access to the actual data that costs...

i use scifinder with my personal login. One can find all chemical information from it. There are many tutorials available for scifinder at library of top universities. You must know how to use efficient otherwise many ppl waste too much time and cost on searching chemical information. Use scifinder in systematic manner.
