Identifying reactions and gases.
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:59:57 AM »
Having trouble with two problems I got. I dont really understand how to do either of them because I missed class. Could anyone take a look at them?

Identify the following reactions as acid/base, redox, precipitation or none of these.
A. HNO3 (aq) + KOH (aq) ---> KNO3 (aq) + H2O (l)
B. AgCl (aq) + Cu (s) --> Ag (s) + CuCl (aq)
C. Na2CO3 (aq) + CuBr2 (aq) --> CuCO3 (s) + 2NABr (aq)
D. H2 (g) + Cl2 (g) --> 2HCl (g)

and

An unknown diatomic gas has a density of 3.164 g/L at STP.
A. STP means standard temperature and pressure - what are the accepted values for STP?
B. What is the identity of the gas?

Any help would be appreciated.

- Thanks

Fair enough.  On these forums so you know, we don't hand out answers, but we'll be more than happy to help guide you through the problem.

Just to start, can you tell me what you know about these subjects?

Acids and Bases, naming them, the list of common acids/bases most General Chemistry books have, etc.
Redox Reactions
Precipitation, if I say "compound Z has precipitated from the solution", do you know what I mean?

If you're familiar with acids and bases, can you start by listing any of the reactions (and the reactants) that you think are acids or bases?
