Reaction of Calcium Hydroxide with Acetic Acid
« on: May 24, 2005, 07:11:09 AM »
Can anyone tell what the reaction products are when acetic acid is added to a solution of calcium hydroxide?

So far I have worked out that calcium acetate Ca(CH3COO)2 and water are formed but not sure about carbon dioxide. I know this is produced when the reaction is carried out with calcium carbonate.

Any ideas? :)

Calcium acetate and water are the only reaction products from acetic acid and calcium hydroxide.  With regard to the carbonate group, my recollection is that bases usually assist in keeping the carbonate in solution and acids facilitate decomposition to CO2.
