organic question from employer?what would you say?
« on: April 01, 2009, 02:23:23 AM »
ok say you get a summer job working as an assistant. You are then asked to check the quantity of chemicals in the stock room to determine which reagents need to be restocked. On the shelf of oxidizers, you find that the labels on the jars of PCC and chromic acid have faded away were you can not read the labels any longer.
1) How will benzyl alcohol assist you in telling the difference between the two oxidizers?
2) What effect would the use of IR have in determining the differences?
3) What effect would the use of NMR have in determining the differences?

I would point you to the original topic you posted

http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=32420.0

and the answer that azmanam posted:

start with the reactions between benzyl alcohol and either PCC or Jones reagent.  What will be the major organic products of each reaction?
