Synthesis of 4-benzyloxyindole
« on: September 12, 2009, 04:08:40 AM »
Does anyone know other methods of creating 4-benzyoxyindole other than the 3 step process from the Batcho and Leimgruber literature?

There are obviously many ways to create this chemical and many starting points. Here is a crude illustration of 4-benzyoxyindole for reference:

  /\

  \/
   |
    \
     O
      |                                                                 OCH2Ph
     /\ _          usually it's shown in it's                         / \ _
    |  |  \        abbreviated form like this:   --->            |  |  \
     \/\  /                                                                 \/\  /
         N                                                                      N
         H                                                                      H

It's just indole with another benzene ring attached via an oxy-link connection. I've seen a few methods discussed on other message boards like Science Madness, but I wanted to see what people here might come up with.

It's always fun figuring out simple alternative syntheses like these because it's like a complex puzzle.

I am curious, do you have a final use for this synthesis?
Do you have a MSDS link I could look at?
I would like to follow along with what you are doing but organic compounds are hard to look up.
