Dichloromethane spill
« on: April 07, 2009, 05:35:44 PM »
I got a little bit of dichloromethane on my hand. I immediately washed it off with soap and water. Do you think I should do anything else

No, don't worry.  You will be fine.  I wouldn't advise taking baths in it, but if you get it on your hand from time to time, you shouldn't worry.

Dear tiff8968;

There is nothing additionally required.
If you like you may use some salve to re-lubricate your skin.

Good Luck!

I remember my first weird solvent spill, it was triethylamine.  I didn't know what to do either, so I asked someone, and he sent me to the MSDS.  It's a good way to learn about all the hazards in the lab, ad your lab should have it handy for you to browse, before you start handling reagents, after you've been exposed, or even to provide to emergency response personnel, they don't necessarily know everything.

In your case, I made s quick online check, of an MSDS for dichloromethane, and got an LD50, dermal, 810 mg.  Usually these are expressed as a dosage per kg.  When you multiply by your weight, you can see, it takes quite a lot to hurt you.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
