How to make H2CuCl4
« on: April 06, 2009, 08:14:05 AM »
Hi everybody,
i need to obtain H2CuCl4 from CuCl2. I thought i could make it by dissolving CuCl2 aqueous solution in an acqueous solution of HCl in stoichiometric rapport. I noticed that the solution i had was still coloured in blu so i though the reaction didnt take place. Also im wondering about the ammount of the H2O molecules that i have to consider if i want to calculate the molecular weight of the H2CuCl4.

thanks to everybody in advance.

As long as it is in water there will be some equilibrium between aqua and chlorides complex. You will have to check stability constants to be able to calculate what is really going on.

You probably have to dissolve solid CuCl2 in concentrated HCl to have a significant amount of the undissociated (very strong) acid H2CuCl4.
