why there is a reaction between propanone and iodine:
 
CH3COCH3(aq) + I2(aq) ----> CH3COCH2I(aq) + HI(aq)

1. by my knowledge, iodine and methylketone with the sodium hydroxide can undergo iodoform reaction which produce carboxylate ion, but why there is a reaction between propanone and iodine and make a substitution of the hydrogen by iodine atom rather than making carboxylate ion?

2. what reaction does it belong to?
     substitution reaction?


3. for the single bond breaking in propanone ,
it seems like the bond breaking in alkane,
then why not a UV light is needed?

they key difference is lack of base.  why is base important in the iodoform reaction?

can ketones do anything in the absence of base that might make them react as if they were in base?
Knowing why you got a question wrong is better than knowing that you got a question right.
