how to find out the molecular volume?
« on: May 02, 2009, 02:15:39 AM »
if given the following question,

for the stearic acid, the area per molecule at the pockel point is 20 armstrong ^2, density is 0.94g/cm3, at 20 deg c, estimate the length of a stearic acid.

how do i find the molecular volume, such that i can take molecular vol/molecular area to get the length?

Try to assume molecule is just a square cuboid and express both surface occupied and volume i nterms of l - length and x - width&height. This will allow you to write two equations - one for the surface occupied, second for the mass of a single molecule.

And you will need molar mass.
