Hey! Just seeking for some help, I've been doing some problems and I'm still quite green 

Anyways:

In the synthesis of Isoxepac, I've got:

               O

bencene[    ]benzene           
           \_O /
     

That horrible "drawing" is supposed to be a heptane at the center with a ketone at the top and an oxigen between two sides ( each  / _ [ ], etc represents a side) and 2 bencenes left and right. I've gotta put a CH2-C-OH in para position of the bencene to the right. Teacher said:                                                                        //

2) NaCN

3) NaOH/H2O/Heat
    Neutralization

I don't understand the 1) 2) steps...

(honestly if anybody understands the drawing it will be a miracle hehe)

I've also gotta do retro of "Binifibrate", so if anybody knows a page with the synthesis or something it's greatly appreciated.
