The atomic number of sulfur is 16 but the number of atoms is 2. what is the difference?

Sulfur forms many molecules, the most common are cyclic S8 and S6. S3 ia an anologue of ozone, S2 exist only in hugh temperature.

This concerns catenation. Can you think why sulphur prefers to form multiple single bonds instead of one multiple bond?

S2 is unstable, S8 is the most stable.
