synthesis of acids
« on: June 29, 2009, 11:50:35 PM »
i'm looking into making some sulfuric and nitric acid in my home lab. I have a steady supply of HCl already (thanks to the local pool store) however i'm having difficulty finding a cheap way to get H2SO4 and HNO3. I don't need reagent grade stuff just need it for some simple organic chem. any leads would be greatly appreciated :)

Some drain cleaners have sulfuric acid in them.

I don’t know how pure, but battery acid (auto store) has sulfuric acid in it.

I got a video on how to make nitric acid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yE7v4wkuZU

I also got one sulfuric acid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okvvD3-DF9U

However neither method i think qualifies as "cheap". The cost for each is still x10-x100 more than just buying it. But if you absolutely cannot get the acids directly then your options are limited.
