Halogen Alkane reactions help plz
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:11:36 AM »
Haloalkanes undergo nucleophillic substitution or elimination. What are the conditions that decide which will occur? Answer probably has something to do with the alcoholic condition but I'm not sure. Thx.

As a general rule nucleophillic substitution will go for tertiary haloalkanes and elimination for primary. Secondary halokanes will likely go by both. However these are broad strokes, it will depend on many factors including solvent, whether the reaction is intramolecular, nuclophillicity...
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
