Le Chatelier's principle - Adding strong acid
« on: August 19, 2009, 05:03:33 PM »
Hi

I've got this equilibrium

AgBr(s) + 2NH3(aq)  ::equil:: [Ag(NH3)2]+(aq) + Br-(aq)

and I'm asked to predict the direction (if any) of the equilibrium when strong acid is added.

Well, I know NH3 is the stronger base, which might causes the equilibrium to shift towards the reactants (to produce more base to neutralize the added acid). However, some of my classmates think that the equilibrium is left untouched. Can someone please provide me with a hint? Thanks.

Equilibrium will definitely shift.

The anion of the acid you add should also be considered.

Regardless of the anion. adding an SA will shift that left.
