Carbonic Acid + Calcium Carbonate - Figuring out concentration
« on: September 02, 2009, 03:32:13 AM »
Hey guys,
I have recently done an experiment with Soda Water and Chalk(carbonic acid + calcium carbonate -->). The Carbonic Acid came from the Soda Water and Calcium Carbonate from the Chalk(mass 2.17 grams). I was wondering how i would go about figuring out the concentration of the Carbonic Acid in the soda water? I dont know a way of figuring out the actual mass of carbonic acid tats in the soda water. I know how to figure out the concentrations when other details are given but i am stumped for this one =x.

Cheers!

I'm not really sure how you want to achieve measuring the amount of carbonic acid in soda water by adding calcium carbonate...

Ahh sorry, i should of been more clear in my post. Basically in the experiment i have to test the effects of increasing/decreasing the concentration of carbonic acid in the reaction between soda water and calcium carbonate. Ive set up a few different sets (400ml soda water + 2gm calcium carbonate), then (200ml soda water + 200ml distilled water + calcium carbonate) etc. the distilled water reduces the concentration of carbonic acid in the soda water, although i have no idea how i am surpose to figure out the concentration of carbonic acid. I can state the effects of increasing/decreasing the concentration and what it does, but i also need to know the exact concentration measurements of the carbonic acid.

Cheers =]

i'm not sure if i'm of help. what i can think of is using the pH (if you've measured) and reverse the calculation to get the M of carbonic acid.

other than that, i'm not sure how you can determine the concentration of carbonic acid...

just my 2 cents worth, hope i'm of help. :)
