Topic: How to disprove someone who claims methanol produces more heat than propanol.  (Read 3050 times)

The questions states that a student claims that methanol creates more heat than propanol.  Now, from what I've read that is not the case because propanol should produce more heat when comparing the two at the same ambient temperature and mass (amount of each substance will be the same).

What type of experiment would be appropriate to disprove the student? Would simply using a calorimeter be appropriate and then call that an experiment?

If so, what calorimeter should be used, a bomb calorimeter?

Calorimetry is definitely the way to go, sounds like you have it sorted to me.  A bomb calorimeter is used for measuring heats of combustion.
